Striking the ball above chest height, especially at shoulder level, is the defining technical challenge of the modern game. As forehand topspin rates have climbed from 2,000 to 4,500-plus RPM over the past couple decades, the standard contact height has risen right along with them. If you can only produce quality backhands at waist height, you're tactically exploitable by any opponent with a real modern topspin forehand — they'll simply keep sending balls at your shoulder.
Why High Balls Are Structurally Harder — Different Reasons for Each Backhand
For a one-hander, extending your arm above shoulder height while staying sideways puts real structural strain on your shoulder joint. Your one-hander depends on full sideways shoulder alignment for maximum coil and upper-back drive, and as your contact point rises, holding that sideways alignment becomes geometrically incompatible with your arm's actual range of motion. This is a documented, structural vulnerability, not a fixable habit.
For a two-hander, your bilateral structure handles high balls noticeably better than a one-hander's — but your non-dominant arm's drive still weakens as contact rises above chest height, because its natural swing path just isn't as comfortable up there. Even elite two-handers show a measurable quality drop above chest height.
Why Opponents Target This Specifically
The kick serve to your backhand — the dominant second-serve pattern in the modern game — exists specifically to create high-ball backhand contact. Its topspin produces a high, kicking bounce toward your backhand side, forcing you to hit above your shoulder — precisely the height where most players are weakest.
The full ad-court kick-and-drive pattern works like this: the kick serve forces contact above your backhand's optimal strike zone; the wide angle pulls you off the court; the kick's spin direction moves the ball away from your body as it rises, making a penetrating two-hander mechanically difficult; and the defensive cross-court backhand you're forced into sets up your opponent's inside-out forehand as their follow-up. Repeated heavy topspin deep to your high backhand also works as a pure attrition strategy — even when you return it successfully, the extra effort needed to override that mechanical inefficiency burns real energy and demands heavy prefrontal engagement, point after point.
Adapting Your Two-Hander
The key insight: your non-dominant hand's driving role has to be maintained even as contact rises. The natural tendency at high-ball contact is to revert to dominant-hand pushing, which produces exactly the "slappy" result — pace without weight — that a healthy two-hander avoids. The fix: your non-dominant elbow has to keep pulling through at shoulder height rather than abandoning the drive just because the contact feels awkward up there. This genuinely needs dedicated training for your non-dominant arm's neural pattern to adjust — check your cross-court backhand quality above and below chest height separately, and if there's a real gap, a focused two-week block with at least half your reps at shoulder height is the standard correction.
Solutions Developed for the One-Hander
Modern one-handers have built specific answers to this problem. The flamingo backhand has you jumping with your front foot and hitting mid-air, raising your body to get a more comfortable contact point on a high ball — approximating the swing you'd use on a waist-high one.
